PİYALE MADRA

Piyale Madra was born in Ankara, in 1958. She furthered her education at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble, France from 1974 on. She graduated from the Graphics Department of State Academy of Fine Arts, School of Applied Industrial Arts in 1977. In 1992, Piyale Madra compiled Piknik (Picnic), the comic strip she had started in Milliyet newspaper in 1982, and continued on with Cumhuriyet newspaper for a period of 10 years, in a book that was published in Turkish and in English. Another comic strip Ademler ve Havvalar (Adams and Eves) was initially published in Yeni Yüzyıl in 1994, and then later moved to Radikal and Hürriyet Daily News until 2014. Ademler ve Havvalar was also published in a series of seven books. Aside from her exhibits in Turkey, Madra opened exhibits in Belgium, France and Italy, as well. She received the Premio Satira Politica award with her exhibit in Italy. Piyale Madra opened joint exhibits, with Paul Gillon in Istanbul, and together with Jean Plantu in Paris. She participated in Cartooning for Peace exhibits in Europe and in the United States. Piknik and Ademler ve Havvalar were produced as animated cartoons, as well, and were aired both in Turkey and abroad. Piyale Madra carried on promotional work for Turkey abroad with the cooperation of TÜSİAD and DHL.
